7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Kumamoto, Triggers Tsunami Warning
A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu on July 28, registering shindo 7 intensity and triggering a tsunami warning for coastal areas with waves up to 1 meter expected. The quake halted all rail services across Kyushu, left approximately 45,600 households without power, and caused several injuries, with multiple aftershocks following.
Quick Facts
- Magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture
- Registered shindo 7 (highest intensity level) in Uki City and Mashiki Town
- Tsunami warning issued for Ariake Bay and Yatsushiro Sea
- All Kyushu railway and Shinkansen services halted
- Approximately 45,600 households lost electricity

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan's Kyushu region on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at 16:27 local time, with its epicenter in Uki City at a depth of 10 kilometers. The quake registered shindo 7, the highest level on Japan's seismic intensity scale, in Uki City and Mashiki Town. Strong shaking of shindo 6 was recorded in Yatsushiro, Uto, and Kumamoto's Minami Ward, while neighboring prefectures including Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, and Miyazaki experienced lower but significant seismic activity.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for Ariake Bay and Yatsushiro Sea on Kumamoto's western coast, warning of potential waves up to 1 meter high. The first tsunami waves were expected to arrive shortly after the initial quake. The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center indicated there was no risk of a tsunami beyond local coastlines.
The earthquake triggered immediate infrastructure disruptions across the region. Kyushu Electric reported approximately 45,600 households lost electricity in Kumamoto Prefecture. All regular railway and Shinkansen (bullet train) services in the Kyushu region were halted. Several people were reported likely injured in Kumamoto Prefecture, according to the fire department, though casualty figures remained preliminary as emergency response teams continued assessment.
Multiple aftershocks followed the main quake. A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck the Kumamoto area at 16:29 with a very shallow depth, registering shindo 5 weak intensity. A second aftershock measuring magnitude 4.2 occurred at 16:39 at a depth of 10 kilometers, with shindo 4 intensity. Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and follow evacuation procedures, warning that additional aftershocks could continue in the following hours.
No abnormalities were reported at nuclear power plants in the affected region. The quake came approximately 10 years after the April 2016 earthquakes that struck Kumamoto, which killed 278 people, injured 2,800, and caused extensive damage including to Kumamoto Castle, whose restoration is not expected to be completed until 2052.
Why This Matters
A magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Kumamoto disrupted critical infrastructure across Japan's Kyushu region: all rail and Shinkansen services halted, approximately 45,600 households lost power, and tsunami warnings affected Ariake Bay and Yatsushiro Sea with expected 1-meter waves. Emergency response teams assessed casualties while authorities monitored continued aftershocks and confirmed no anomalies at regional nuclear plants. This is the largest seismic event in the region since the April 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes that killed 278 people.
