Georgia running back Dante Dowdell is receiving treatment at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a medical facility specializing in spinal cord and brain injuries, following a serious ATV accident near his home in Picayune, Mississippi. Coach Kirby Smart confirmed the incident at SEC Media Days in Tampa, Florida on Tuesday, stating that Dowdell's return timeline is uncertain. "He's injured," Smart said. "We don't know when his return will be. I don't know the specifics of it, to be honest with you. It was a recreational vehicle, and he had some serious injuries."
Smart indicated the severity of Dowdell's condition by noting he had been treated at multiple hospitals before arriving in Georgia. "He's out of the really tough range, but as far as his complete health and coming all the way back, I don't know what that looks like in terms of this year," Smart said. Despite the uncertainty, Smart expressed confidence in Dowdell's recovery prospects. "We expect a full recovery, but the outlook right now is we're waiting to see."
Dowdell, a senior, transferred to Georgia from Kentucky this offseason after recording 560 rushing yards and three touchdowns in 2025. The 6-foot-2, 227-pound tailback was expected to serve as a key backup to returning starter Nate Frazier. Dowdell has played for four programs since 2023, including Oregon in 2023, Nebraska in 2024 (where he rushed for 614 yards and 12 touchdowns), and Kentucky in 2025. Under new NCAA rules, he retains a fifth year of eligibility.
Georgia's running back room includes returning contributors Chauncey Bowens and Dwight Phillips Jr., along with recent recruits Jae Lamar and Nick Peal. Smart praised Dowdell as "just a tremendous kid [with a] great family," noting that Georgia players have visited him. The injury marks the second significant setback for Georgia's 2026 roster, following an ACL injury to outside linebacker Amaris Williams in April. Georgia opens the 2026 season on September 5 against Tennessee State.
Why This Matters
Dowdell's hospitalization removes an expected backup running back from Georgia's 2026 roster during preseason preparation. The transfer from Kentucky was projected to contribute to a rotation at a key offensive position; his absence and uncertain return timeline may alter team depth charts and game-planning assumptions heading toward the September 5 season opener against Tennessee State. Shepherd Center specializes in spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation, indicating the severity of initial injuries, though Smart stated Dowdell has progressed out of critical condition.
