Messi excused from 2026 MLS All-Star Game under World Cup recovery agreement
Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul have been excused from the 2026 MLS All-Star Game on July 29 under a pre-arranged agreement allowing World Cup participants to rest and recover. Unlike his controversial absence last year, Messi faces no suspension this time.
Quick Facts
- MLS All-Star Game roster changed
- Messi removed from All-Star Game roster
- De Paul removed from All-Star Game roster
- Four players replaced on roster
- MLS and MLSPA pre-season agreement for World Cup recovery

Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul have been removed from the 2026 MLS All-Star Game roster, scheduled for July 29 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Both players are recovering after Argentina reached the FIFA World Cup final on July 19, where they lost 1–0 to Spain.
Unlike last year's controversy, Messi faces no punishment this time. Major League Soccer and the MLS Players Association agreed prior to the 2026 season that players exiting the World Cup would be granted rest and recovery periods determined through individual conversations between clubs and athletes. The league confirmed that Messi and De Paul have been officially excused from the All-Star Game under this agreement, protecting them from suspension or fines.
Last year, Messi and Inter Miami teammate Jordi Alba were suspended for one match after skipping the 2025 All-Star Game without prior approval due to fixture congestion. MLS Commissioner Don Garber acknowledged the difficulty of Messi's schedule but enforced the league's long-standing policy. This year's pre-arranged World Cup exemption removes that uncertainty.
Four players were replaced on the roster: Messi, De Paul, Golden Boot leader Hugo Cuypers (transferred to Monterrey), and Mbekezeli Mbokazi (lower body injury). Replacements include Inter Miami's Yannick Bright, Vancouver's Andrés Cubas, Houston's Guilherme, and Chicago's Philip Zinckernagel. The MLS All-Star squad will feature international stars including Son Heung-min (LAFC), Thomas Müller (Vancouver Whitecaps), and U.S. national team captain Tim Ream (Charlotte FC), along with World Cup participants from multiple nations.
Why This Matters
MLS roster management policy changes affect player availability for marquee events and rest protocols. The 2026 All-Star Game loses two high-profile participants (Messi and De Paul), reducing star power for the July 29 exhibition at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. The pre-arranged World Cup exemption establishes formal recovery rights for international tournament participants, contrasting with last year's suspension of Messi and Jordi Alba for unannounced absence. Four roster replacements (Bright, Cubas, Guilherme, Zinckernagel) will fill vacant slots; the game will still feature international stars including Son Heung-min, Thomas Müller, and Tim Ream.
