Cristiano Ronaldo retires from Portugal national team after 23 years

Ronaldo's retirement removes one of international football's two dominant scorers from active international competition; his 234 appearances and 146 goals remain men's records. The departure follows a public dispute with Portugal's coaching staff in September 2026 and occurs six weeks after Lionel Messi's Argentina retirement, marking the exit of two players who shaped international football strategy and tournament outcomes for over 20 years. Portugal will need to restructure its national team forward planning; Ronaldo's status as captain and leading goal-scorer for major tournaments is now vacant. His continued club career at Al-Nassr (Saudi Arabia) and pursuit of 1,000 career goals remain separate from international competition.
