U.S. inflation accelerates to 3.7% in September as gasoline prices surge
U.S. inflation accelerated to 3.7% in September, the highest since May, driven by a sharp 9.1% surge in gasoline prices linked to Middle East energy supply disruptions. The monthly increase of 0.6% exceeded economist forecasts, with core inflation broadening beyond energy to shelter and other services.
Quick Facts
- Consumer Price Index rose 0.6% monthly and 3.7% annually
- Gasoline prices jumped 9.1% in September, up 34.2% year-on-year
- Core CPI rose 0.3% monthly and 2.6% annually
- Energy prices climbed 5.2% for the month
- Crude oil price rose above $100 per barrel

U.S. consumer prices rose more than expected in September, with annual inflation reaching 3.7%, the highest level since May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The monthly consumer price index rose 0.6% from August, exceeding economist forecasts of a 3.6% annual increase.
Gasoline prices were the primary driver of inflation, jumping 9.1% in September alone and accounting for more than half of the monthly CPI increase. On an annual basis, gasoline prices were up 34.2% from September 2025. Overall energy prices climbed 5.2% for the month, following a 2.1% rise in August. The surge in energy costs is attributed to disruptions in Middle Eastern energy supplies linked to the ongoing U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran. Crude oil prices rose above $100 per barrel from approximately $70 before the conflict began, reflecting reduced supply.
Inflationary pressures extended beyond energy markets. Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.3% for the second consecutive month and 2.6% year-on-year. Analysts noted broadening price pressures in shelter costs and airfares, as fuel costs are passed through to consumers. Food inflation remained subdued at 2.5% year-on-year, with prices flat in September.
The hotter-than-expected inflation report increased pressure on the Federal Reserve ahead of its October 27–28 policy meeting, with market participants raising bets on another interest rate hike. U.S. stock futures fell and Treasury yields rose following the release. Economists cautioned that sustained energy inflation could spread to other sectors of the economy.
Shorty after the inflation data release, the Social Security Administration announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027, effective January 1 for approximately 72 million recipients, averaging a $75 monthly increase in retirement benefits.
Why This Matters
U.S. inflation at 3.7% annually and 0.6% monthly exceeds consensus forecasts, raising market expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate decisions at its October 27–28 meeting. Oil prices above $100 per barrel—up from ~$70 before Middle East supply disruptions—ripple through energy-dependent sectors (shelter, airfares, food supply chains). Social Security recipients gain a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment effective January 1, 2027 (72 million beneficiaries, ~$75 monthly increase). Sustained energy inflation may broaden to other consumer sectors; stock futures fell and Treasury yields rose on the data release.
