Six dead in Sunset Park, Brooklyn residential fire early Thursday

Six deaths in a residential fire raise immediate questions about fire safety codes and lithium-ion battery storage regulations in multi-unit buildings. Over 400 lithium-ion battery fires have been reported in New York City in 2026, with seven prior deaths; this incident brings the total to 13. City officials and building code enforcement face pressure to clarify storage requirements and fire prevention standards for rechargeable batteries in residential areas. The incident affects approximately 2 million residents in similar multi-story wooden-frame housing across Brooklyn.
