Indian Opposition Marches to Supreme Court Over Voter List Removal

Over 130 million voter registrations have been removed from India's electoral rolls during a "Special Intense Revision" process initiated last year. Opposition parties allege the purges are politically motivated and disenfranchise eligible voters; the Election Commission and ruling BJP state the removals target duplicates and ineligible names. The dispute directly affects voter eligibility in future elections and raises questions about the independence of electoral administration. Immediate measurable stakes include whether the Chief Election Commissioner will resign, whether courts will order review of the removal process, and whether electoral procedures will be altered before upcoming state or national elections.
