Microsoft is internally projecting that its next-generation Project Helix console will cost between $1,200 and $1,800 when it launches in time for the 2028 holiday season, according to a Fortune report citing company sources. The high price reflects rising costs of memory, storage, and electronic components, driven partly by increased demand from AI tools. Microsoft may choose to subsidize the device to offer consumers a lower price, a strategy the company has historically used to remain competitive in the console market.
Along with the main console, Microsoft plans to release a next-generation handheld device by the end of 2027 that will run all Xbox games and be fully compatible with Project Helix. According to Fortune, the handheld launch has accelerated Microsoft's internal engineering deadlines by several months, putting pressure on developers to meet accelerated timelines, including the use of AI tools to speed up development.
The Project Helix rollout comes amid internal organizational tensions at Microsoft. Fortune reports clashes between the Xbox and Windows teams over the handheld's operating system—the Windows team advocated for a trimmed-down version of Windows Home, while the Xbox team pushed for custom software built and controlled by Xbox. One high-level executive reportedly threatened to cancel the handheld if forced to use Windows. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma stated, "We can't build Helix on our own," indicating the need for cross-team collaboration.
The pricing challenge reflects a broader shift in gaming hardware costs. The PlayStation 5 Pro costs $900, the Xbox Series X now starts at $750 (up from its $500 launch price in 2020), and high-end gaming systems like the Steam Machine have crossed the $1,000 threshold. Component inflation has affected existing hardware; the Xbox Series X price rose from $500 in November 2020 to $800 by August 2026.
Why This Matters
Microsoft's Project Helix pricing signals a structural shift in gaming hardware economics: component inflation driven by AI demand is raising baseline console costs 140–260% above current-generation pricing (PS5 Pro at $900, Xbox Series X at $750). If launched at the projected $1,200–$1,800 range without subsidy, the device would price above high-end gaming PCs, altering consumer purchase decisions and market segmentation. Accelerated handheld deadlines and reported internal friction over OS choice introduce execution risk that could delay or alter product specifications before 2028 launch.
