UN Secretary-General Guterres arrives in Indonesia for three-day state visit
UN Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Jakarta on 17 October 2026 for a three-day state visit, his first under President Prabowo's administration. He will meet the president, visit the Indonesian peacekeeping center, and deliver a speech on multilateralism at the Foreign Ministry.
Quick Facts
- State visit by UN Secretary-General
- Bilateral meeting with President
- Visit to Peacekeeping Mission Center (PMPP TNI)
- Laying of flowers honoring 50 fallen Indonesian peacekeepers
- Speech on future of multilateralism

António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, on Saturday evening, 17 October 2026. He was received with a state ceremony and honor guard, welcomed by Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir and representatives of the Indonesian government and UN. Guterres proceeded directly to his hotel in Jakarta.
The visit, scheduled through Monday, 19 October 2026, is the first official visit by a UN Secretary-General during President Prabowo Subianto's administration. Key planned activities include a bilateral meeting with President Prabowo, a visit to the Indonesian National Armed Forces' Peacekeeping Mission Center (PMPP TNI) in Bogor, and a speech on the future of multilateralism at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta.
At the peacekeeping center, Guterres will lay flowers to honor 50 Indonesian peacekeepers who died while serving under the UN flag, and will meet with soldiers preparing for deployment to the UN Multidisciplinary Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA). According to UN spokesman Farhan Haq, discussions during the visit will focus on strengthening cooperation between Indonesia and the UN within the multilateral system.
To accommodate the state delegation, Jakarta police announced temporary traffic management across multiple routes in the capital and surrounding areas. The Indonesian National Police's Traffic Management Center stated that road closures will be situational and temporary, occurring only while the motorcade passes, with traffic resuming immediately afterward. Affected roads include routes to and from the airport, central Jakarta government areas, and roads leading to Bogor.
Why This Matters
A UN Secretary-General state visit establishes bilateral engagement on multilateral cooperation frameworks and peacekeeping operations. Indonesia hosts a significant UN peacekeeping infrastructure; this visit signals coordination on regional stabilization missions (MINUSCA in Central African Republic) and reaffirms UN-member state operational alignment under a new presidential administration. The visit involves ceremonial recognition of 50 fallen peacekeepers and direct policy dialogue on multilateral system participation.
