European Gas Prices Drop 10% as U.S.-Iran Talks Advance
European natural gas prices fell over 10 percent on Monday—their steepest daily decline since April 8—as renewed hopes for U.S.-Iran negotiations eased fears of Middle East supply disruptions. Despite the sharp drop, tight EU gas storage levels and approaching winter weather keep the market vulnerable to further volatility.
Quick Facts
- European natural gas prices fell more than 10 percent
- Dutch TTF December futures contract dropped to 93.18 euros per MWh
- Iran's Supreme Leader authorized government to negotiate with United States
- U.S. President expressed openness to extending diplomatic efforts
- Day-ahead spot prices at TTF fell to 95.25 euros per MWh

European natural gas prices fell more than 10 percent on Monday, marking their steepest daily decline since April 8, as renewed diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran eased concerns over Middle East energy supply disruptions.
The Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF) benchmark futures contract for December delivery dropped to 93.18 euros per megawatt-hour by 1800 GMT on the Intercontinental Exchange, retreating from the previous week's surge above 100 euros per MWh. Spot prices for day-ahead gas at the TTF hub also fell to approximately 95.25 euros per MWh. The decline followed reports that Iran's Supreme Leader had authorized the government to engage in negotiations with the United States aimed at resolving the conflict, while U.S. President Donald Trump expressed openness to extending diplomatic efforts.
The prospect of renewed talks reduced the geopolitical risk premium that had driven energy prices sharply higher in recent weeks. October had seen European gas prices reach 2.6 times the level of the prior year, with spot prices at the TTF briefly exceeding $1,200 per 1,000 cubic meters—the highest level since December 2022—as low storage levels and Middle East tensions collided ahead of winter.
Despite Monday's sharp decline, Europe's gas market remains vulnerable to supply pressures. As of November 1, EU gas storage facilities were 74.62 percent full, while Germany's storage stood at 61.03 percent, below the country's 70-percent target. Analysts warned that tight supply conditions and approaching winter heating demand could sustain volatility, with colder weather potentially accelerating withdrawals from already depleted reserves.
Why This Matters
European gas prices affect industrial production costs, heating bills, and electricity generation across the EU. A 10% single-day decline signals reduced geopolitical risk premium from potential Middle East supply disruptions. However, storage levels remain below seasonal targets (EU 74.62%, Germany 61.03% vs. 70% target), meaning supply tightness persists heading into winter demand; colder weather or negotiations breakdown could reverse recent price declines and reignite volatility.
