Madonna University in Elele, Rivers State, Nigeria, has expelled one final-year nursing student identified as Mercy and suspended 14 other 500-level students following a viral TikTok video recorded in the university's teaching hospital. The video, uploaded in August and widely shared in September, showed nursing students dancing in hospital settings including a waiting area, staircase, and bus. It was captioned in Pidgin English: "No fall sick o, na Gen Z full hospital now" and became part of an online "Gen Z nurses" challenge. A 15-second version posted by social media accounts accumulated over 1.7 million views on X by early October.
The university's Public Relations Officer, Chima Achu, confirmed the disciplinary action and indicated the institution would release an official statement. Medical influencer Nurse Girma drew public attention to the case and appealed for clemency, noting the students were undergraduates rather than registered nurses. The expulsion sparked divided reactions on social media. Some users argued the students had breached institutional guidelines and mocked the healthcare profession; others contended that the dance was harmless stress-relief and that expulsion was excessive punishment for years of study investment.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) clarified that only one student was expelled—contradicting earlier reports suggesting all affected students faced expulsion—while 14 were suspended. NANS President Akinteye "Babtee" Afeez acknowledged the students' conduct as inappropriate and contrary to professional standards expected of nursing students, but appealed to the university to show clemency. NANS urged Madonna University to replace the expulsion with a stern warning or less severe disciplinary measure, citing the potential lasting impact on the student's education, career, and mental wellbeing. The university has not announced whether it will reconsider the sanctions.
Why This Matters
One final-year nursing student faces expulsion and 14 others suspension from Madonna University, directly affecting their medical credentials and career timeline in Nigeria's healthcare sector. The disciplinary decision follows a viral social media video and reflects institutional enforcement of professional conduct standards for nursing students; NANS's appeal introduces potential for policy reconsideration that could affect precedent for similar cases and student disciplinary procedures at the university. The outcome will determine whether the sanction stands or is modified, with measurable consequences for the affected students' graduation status and professional registration eligibility.
