Google launches Googlebook Android laptops starting at $899, shipping October 4

Google announced the Googlebook line of premium laptops on September 21, 2026, marking the company's entry into the high-end laptop market. The devices, built in partnership with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, start at $899 and are available for pre-order today, with general availability on October 4 in the U.S. and October 5 in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia.

Googlebooks run on an Android-based operating system paired with desktop elements from ChromeOS, designed to integrate seamlessly with Android phones. The lineup consists of five distinct models featuring premium materials including aluminum, magnesium alloy, and carbon fiber. All models include at least 16GB of RAM, with some offering 32GB upgrades. The laptops use either Intel Core Ultra Series 3 (Panther Lake) or Snapdragon X Elite processors, paired with NPUs capable of over 45 TOPS of on-device AI performance. Design features include up to 2.8K OLED touchscreens, haptic glass trackpads, backlit keyboards, and a distinctive illuminated "Glowbar" on the lid that lights up at startup and shows battery level. All designs are fanless, with Google claiming up to 14 hours of video playback and 16 hours of web browsing on a single charge.

The core pitch positions Googlebooks as laptops optimized for Android phone users, offering tighter integration than previous Chromebooks. Key software features include "Continue On," which allows users to resume tasks started on their Android phone directly on the laptop; "Cast My Apps," enabling users to stream and interact with phone apps in desktop windows; and "Files," providing access to phone content directly on the laptop. All Googlebooks ship with end-to-end encryption for synced data and automatically transfer settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks, and messages from Android phones during setup.

Google has integrated its Gemini AI throughout the Googlebook experience. Features include "Magic Pointer," an AI-powered cursor that users can wiggle to access Gemini for tasks like organizing calendars or translating text; "Rambler," which converts spoken thoughts into organized, formatted text; and "Create My Widget," allowing users to generate custom desktop widgets by describing their needs in natural language. The Glowbar also reacts with animations when users interact with Gemini.

Every Googlebook includes 12 months of Google AI Pro (providing 5TB of cloud storage and Gemini Advanced tools), 3 months of YouTube Premium, and 3 months of Adobe Photoshop. The devices will receive regular software updates for up to 10 years. Pre-orders are open on the Google Store, Best Buy, and select retailers. Google's Android president Sameer Samat framed Googlebooks as addressing a gap where "there isn't a laptop platform built to work seamlessly with your Android phone," positioning the devices as Android's equivalent to the Mac-iPhone ecosystem.
