Xiaomi 18 Pro and Pro Max launch with privacy displays and Snapdragon 8 Elite chips

Xiaomi unveiled the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max on September 23, 2026, in China as the company's latest flagship smartphones. The devices are the first phones on the market to feature Qualcomm's newly announced Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processors, which run at speeds up to 5 GHz on a 2-nanometer process. The Pro Max variant uses the Extreme version of the chip, which includes enhanced thermal management for sustained performance during extended gaming sessions.

Both phones feature hardware-level privacy display technology similar to Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra implementation but with expanded functionality. Xiaomi's privacy mode restricts viewing angles to prevent screen peeping and can be triggered by location-based rules, camera detection of prying eyes, or a dedicated AI button. When activated for specific apps, the privacy mode extends to notifications, floating windows, and split-screen configurations without affecting the rest of the display. The phones retain rear-facing secondary displays (2.7 inches on the Pro, 2.9 inches on the Pro Max) with over 100 optimized applications and new AI-powered mini-app creation capabilities through Xiaomi's Xiao AI assistant.

Camera specifications are identical across both models: a 200-megapixel main camera on a 1/1.28-inch sensor, a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto with 3.2x optical zoom, and a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens. The main displays measure 6.4 inches (Pro) and 6.9 inches (Pro Max), both AMOLED with 4,000 nits peak brightness and 120 Hz refresh rates. Battery capacities increased to 7,000 mAh (Pro, 11% larger than predecessor) and 8,500 mAh (Pro Max, 13% larger), with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging on both models. Display bezels were reduced to a record 0.99 millimeters.

Pricing in China starts at CNY 5,999 (approximately USD 895) for the 18 Pro with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage, and CNY 6,999 (approximately USD 1,045) for the 18 Pro Max with the same configuration. A special edition transparent red variant is available exclusively with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB storage, priced at CNY 9,999 (Pro) and CNY 10,999 (Pro Max). Pre-orders opened immediately following the announcement, with the special edition's first batch selling out on launch night according to Xiaomi president Lu Weibing.

The standard Xiaomi 18 was not presented at the launch event. Lu Weibing confirmed it will debut separately, following an approach similar to Apple's iPhone strategy. Insider reports suggest the base model will arrive in December with a Snapdragon 8 Ultra Gen 6 processor. Both 18 Pro models run HyperOS 4 based on Android 17 and include IP69 ingress protection. Xiaomi confirmed a global launch will occur later in 2026, marking the first international release of a Pro-series Xiaomi flagship since the 17 Pro skipped international markets.
