Trump optimistic on Ukraine-Russia peace talks as diplomatic push continues

Donald Trump expressed optimism that peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are making progress, stating that both parties appear ready to reach an agreement. In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump said he believes the sides have reached a point where they can "find a deal." The Kremlin, through spokesman Dmitry Peskov, stated that Russia sincerely hopes Trump will continue his peacemaking efforts following the US midterm elections, which resulted in a Democratic congressional victory. Peskov noted that another round of trilateral talks is expected soon and cited the peacekeeping efforts of US First Lady Melania Trump as having been successful.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Berlin for talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on November 4. Germany announced an additional 200 million euros in aid to Ukraine ahead of the winter, comprising 100 million euros from the foreign ministry budget and 100 million euros from development policy funds. Merz emphasized that Germany will continue supporting Ukraine's air defense and other defensive measures, framing the assistance as being in Germany's own strategic interest. He also stated that the EU should collectively share responsibility for supporting Ukraine rather than Germany bearing the burden alone.

Zelensky insisted that meaningful peace discussions require in-person meetings rather than phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that telephone conversations would allow Russia to avoid genuine negotiations. He rejected the possibility of inviting Putin to Kyiv, noting that Russian forces entered Ukraine without invitation in 2022. Zelensky characterized Russian attacks as ongoing and rejected the notion of phone diplomacy as ineffective. According to reports, trilateral talks involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States are scheduled for November 11-12 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Merz also announced that a new summit of the Coalition of the Willing will be held in Berlin on November 19.
