The crater formed in spring 2024 when an asteroid or comet fragment—estimated to be the size of a 3–6 story building—struck the lunar surface. The impact was not observed in real time by ground-based telescopes; LRO first recorded surface changes between April and May 2024, and the crater was formally identified in August 2025.
The crater has been named McGetchin, in honor of Thomas McGetchin, former director of the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston. It is approximately three times larger than the previous record holder, a crater detected by LRO a decade earlier. According to researchers, impact events of this magnitude occur statistically about once every 130–132 years, making this discovery a rare observation.
