Santa Monica Studio Announces New Kratos Game Following God of War: Laufey

At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Santa Monica Studio head of creative Cory Barlog announced that a new God of War game starring Kratos is in active development and will follow the release of God of War: Laufey. The upcoming title will connect directly to Laufey's narrative, which centers on Faye, Kratos' deceased wife, as she navigates the Everywhen—the afterlife of the gods—while events parallel those of God of War Ragnarök.

Barlog emphasized during the "God of War Laufey: Forging God of War's Next Heroes" panel that the new Kratos-led game is part of the studio's broader strategy to expand the God of War universe with new characters and deeper storytelling. He described Laufey not as a departure but as "a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next." No release date, platform, or official title has been disclosed for the upcoming Kratos game, though Barlog confirmed it will form a direct narrative bridge with Laufey's story.

God of War: Laufey itself received an official release date of February 16, 2027, exclusively for PlayStation 5. The game will launch on physical disc and digital formats. During the panel, Barlog also reiterated Santa Monica's commitment to future Kratos-led projects, stating "there's always going to be Kratos games," a sentiment echoed by studio social media, which promised "many more stories to tell with him."

The announcement addresses mixed fan reception to Laufey's protagonist shift away from Kratos. While many praised the game's combat system and visuals, others expressed concern about the franchise's direction.
