God of War: Laufey launches PS5 February 16, 2027 with Faye as protagonist

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Santa Monica Studio announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 that God of War: Laufey will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027. The game marks the first mainline God of War title to center on Faye (also known as Laufey), the deceased wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus from the 2018 reboot and Ragnarök.

The narrative follows Faye as she awakens in Everywhen, the afterlife realm of the gods, after Kratos and Atreus cremate her body at the story's beginning. Faye discovers that her plans to protect Kratos and Atreus in her absence are now at risk. To save them, she must navigate Everywhen—a world filled with dangerous magic where ruthless gods from multiple mythologies vie for power. Players will control Faye using her speed, precision strikes, and powerful abilities to overcome adversaries. Supporting characters include Phranque and Rue, who join Faye's journey.

At the Comic-Con panel, Santa Monica Studio creative head Cory Barlog described Laufey as a bridge in the franchise rather than a detour, emphasizing that the game continues the narrative of previous titles while setting up future ones. Barlog stated: "Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next." The game will return to classic hack-and-slash combat with fast-paced action, aerial combos, and character-driven storytelling.

The announcement also confirmed that a new Kratos-led God of War game is in development and will launch after Laufey, connecting directly to Faye's story. No release date or platform details were provided for the upcoming Kratos title. The February 16, 2027 release date places God of War: Laufey in a competitive window alongside Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis (February 12), Persona 4 Revival (February 18), Fable (February 23), and Metro 2039. The game will be available on physical disc, as Sony has confirmed that digital-only releases will begin in January 2028.
