Arrmanatha Nasir appointed Indonesia's new foreign minister

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto appointed Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir as the country's new foreign minister on October 1, 2026, in a cabinet reshuffle held at the presidential palace in Jakarta. Nasir, who previously served as deputy foreign minister, replaces Sugiono, who was moved to the position of coordinating minister for human development and culture.

Nasir, born in Bangkok, Thailand, on December 30, 1971, holds degrees in economics from the University of Buckingham, an MBA from the University of Leicester, and a master's degree in international relations from the University of Indonesia. He joined Indonesia's foreign ministry in 1997 and has held several senior diplomatic positions, including serving as Indonesia's permanent representative to the United Nations from 2021 to 2024. He also previously worked in the private sector at Bank Danamon and Bank Sagang Negara, and held roles in agricultural and trade directorates. In 2021, he received the Commander of the Legion of Honour from France.

Sugiono, who had served as foreign minister since October 2024, was the first non-career diplomat to hold the position since 2001. Before his appointment as foreign minister, he served as vice chair of the parliamentary Commission I and held roles within the Gerindra party, of which he remains secretary general.

The cabinet reshuffle, proposed to parliament on September 30, also included other ministerial changes. Suyudi Ario Seto, formerly head of the National Narcotics Agency, was appointed as the new National Police chief. Additional appointments included Bahlil Lahadalia as coordinating minister for industrialisation and energy (and concurrent minister of energy and mineral resources), M. Sarmuji as minister of industry, and General Listyo Sigit Prabowo as head of the presidential staff.
