Brazil advances to October 25 runoff after Bolsonaro, Lula split first round

Brazil's largest economy is entering a three-week runoff that will determine leadership during a period of elevated domestic concerns over crime and cost of living, as well as shifting geopolitical tensions in the region. The result diverged from pre-election polls favoring Lula, with analysts attributing Bolsonaro's gain to consolidated support from eliminated center-right and libertarian voters; swing voters and turnout patterns will now determine the October 25 outcome. Policy continuity on economic, crime, and foreign relations issues hinges on the runoff result.
