Greece secured a historic 1-0 victory over Germany in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday in Augsburg, marking the first defeat for Jürgen Klopp as Germany manager and Greece's first-ever win against the four-time World Cup holders. Dimitrios Kourbelis scored the decisive goal in the 74th minute after a counter-attack, with his low shot taking a deflection off Germany captain Joshua Kimmich before rolling into the net.
Klopp's side dominated possession throughout the match but struggled to create and convert clear-cut chances. Germany's attack lacked incisiveness against Greece's deep defensive setup, with Barcelona forward Karim Adeyemi squandering the team's best opportunity in the first half when he shot over the crossbar. Hoffenheim midfielder Bambase Conte, one of five changes Klopp made to the lineup from Germany's opening 1-1 draw with the Netherlands, looked sharp but could not break through.
Greece grew increasingly dangerous on the counter-attack as the match progressed. The visitors should have scored earlier when Fotis Ioannidis had a clear chance but blasted wide. Klopp's decision to field five changes and include 16 uncapped players in his 44-man squad reflected his stated intention to assess available talent following Germany's third consecutive early exit from the World Cup in July.
Joshua Kimmich, Germany's captain and most experienced player on the pitch, acknowledged his role in the defeat. He admitted to giving the ball away in the second half, which created a major opportunity for Greece, and accepted responsibility for the deflection that led to Kourbelis' goal. Despite the setback, Kimmich expressed a commitment to improvement and helping his teammates.
The result leaves Germany with one point from two matches in Nations League Group B. Greece tops the group with six points after back-to-back victories, while the Netherlands sits second with four points and Serbia remains without points. Klopp's team faces Serbia on 1 October before a return visit to Greece three days later.
