Klopp Secures First Win as Germany Coach with 2-0 Nations League Victory Over Serbia

Jürgen Klopp claimed his first victory as Germany's head coach with a decisive 2-0 Nations League win over Serbia in Munich on October 1, 2026. Goals from Tom Bischof in the 39th minute and Florian Wirtz in the 61st minute ended a difficult start to Klopp's tenure, which had included a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands and a shock 1-0 loss to Greece. The victory came before 68,121 spectators at the Allianz Arena and represented the team's first win since exiting the World Cup in the round of 32 to Paraguay.

Klopp implemented a radical squad rotation, fundamentally reshaping the starting lineup with three senior debutants—goalkeeper Jonas Urbig from Bayern Munich, forward Derry Scherhant from SC Freiburg, and midfielder Said El Mala from Cologne (who entered in the second half). Only five players from the Greece match remained, as Klopp deliberately rested captain Joshua Kimmich and other established figures to assess younger talent without the presence of senior leaders. Serge Gnabry captained the team in Kimmich's absence, while midfielder Mika Baur's substitution in the closing stages marked a historical milestone: he became the 1,000th player to represent Germany's men's national team since record-keeping began (excluding former East German players).

The match demonstrated the high-pressure, intensive football Klopp aims to instill. Germany dominated from the outset, creating numerous chances through Aleksandar Pavlovic, Gnabry, and Wirtz before breaking through. Wirtz struck the post from inside the penalty area, and Bischof reacted quickest to fire home the rebound. In the second half, Wirtz doubled the advantage after receiving a pass from Maximilian Mittelstädt on the left flank, controlling the ball past defender Srdjan Babic before finishing into the far corner. Serbia rarely threatened, with goalkeeper Dordje Petrovic forced into multiple saves but Germany's own profligacy in front of goal the primary reason the scoreline was not more emphatic.

Klopp expressed satisfaction with the performance, stating: "The way we want to play suits Florian Wirtz" and emphasizing the disciplined pressing and intensity. He noted that the team operated with pace and pressing intensity that contrasted sharply with the preceding defeat to Greece. Following the victory, Germany remained third in Nations League Group A2 with four points, behind Greece (seven points) and the Netherlands (five points), while Serbia remained without a point. Germany faces Greece again on October 4 in Thessaloniki in the final fixture of the international window.
