Luis Suárez scores against Lens, becomes Sporting's all-time Champions League top scorer

Colombian forward Luis Suárez opened the scoring for Sporting Lisboa against RC Lens in the second matchday of the UEFA Champions League on October 13, 2026. In the 22nd minute, Suárez received a low cross from left wing by Nestory Irankunda and finished with the outside of his right foot past goalkeeper Robin Risser to make it 1-0.

This goal marked a historic milestone for Suárez with Sporting. The strike brought him to seven goals in the Champions League for the Portuguese club, making him the all-time leading goalscorer in the competition's history for Sporting Lisboa, surpassing previous records held by players including Liedson, Gyökeres, and Trincão, who each had six goals.

Suárez's performance reflects a remarkable scoring run since joining Sporting. The 28-year-old from Santa Marta, Colombia, has accumulated nine goals in eight matches across all competitions for the club. After returning from the World Cup and a brief two-match goalless stretch, he entered an unstoppable streak beginning August 22, scoring in each subsequent match. This goal against Lens was his second in the current Champions League campaign, having also scored a penalty against Galatasaray in Sporting's 3-1 opening victory.

The goal underscores Suárez's impact as a replacement for Viktor Gyökeres and his emergence as a leading figure in European football's top club competition. Portuguese media outlets including A Bola, O Jogo, and Récord highlighted the significance of the record, emphasizing Suárez's central role in Sporting's Champions League campaign.
