School roof collapses in Peshawar, Pakistan; at least 33 students and teacher killed

A roof collapsed at Al-Khair Public School in Peshawar, northwestern Pakistan, on Thursday morning, killing at least 33 students and one teacher, with dozens more injured, according to hospital officials and rescue workers. The collapse occurred as classes were beginning at the private school located in Dir Colony, a crowded neighborhood with narrow streets that hampered rescue operations. Emergency services arrived within minutes of the incident at 08:48 local time, but retrieving victims from the rubble took several hours with heavy machinery.

The school building, constructed on a temporary basis, had structural deficiencies that contributed to the disaster. Police chief Mian Saeed confirmed that classrooms on three floors collapsed after the upper-floor roof gave way, bringing down ceilings in lower levels and trapping children beneath debris. The structure had "substandard" roof slabs and was "overloaded" beyond its weight capacity, according to Saeed. Heavy overnight rainfall may have destabilized the roof, according to local rescue services. Hospital officials reported at least 53 injured children, some in critical condition, with at least 32 children and one teacher pronounced dead at Lady Reading Hospital and one additional child at Naseerullah Khan Babar Memorial Hospital.

Local residents were among the first responders, pulling more than 20 children from the rubble before emergency services arrived. An English teacher from a nearby school reported retrieving six children by hand, most initially alive but later pronounced dead. The school's owner has been arrested and faces multiple charges including murder. Police chief Saeed promised a thorough inquiry into "whether there were any violations of building codes."

The incident reflects broader structural safety challenges in Pakistan. The Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ordered an immediate safety audit of all schools in the province following the collapse. Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari called the incident a "heart-wrenching tragedy," while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered authorities to provide the best possible treatment to injured students. The collapse comes weeks after a hospital fire in Islamabad killed 14 newborns in a nursery with no fire alarms or sprinkler systems, and months after a tutoring center roof collapse in Lahore killed 14 schoolchildren in June.
