Defending world champion Lando Norris has called for a race ban for Franco Colapinto after the Alpine driver triggered a multi-car collision during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, eliminating Norris from the race and dealing a decisive blow to his title defense.

The incident occurred at the first corner during a safety car restart on lap 36. Colapinto braked too late and locked up, sliding into his Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly. Gasly's car then struck Norris' McLaren, spinning the British driver into the barriers. Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad also collided with his teammate Liam Lawson while avoiding the initial crash. All three primary cars—both Alpines and Norris' McLaren—were forced to retire. Colapinto, running tenth at the time, immediately apologized, describing it as a "big mistake" and attributing the error to cold brakes and cold tyres on the restart.

Norris expressed strong frustration, telling broadcasters: "I just got taken out. There's just some drivers that shouldn't be in Formula 1, to be honest." In follow-up comments, he called for stricter FIA sanctions, stating: "If you cause a crash on a restart like this, you should have at least a one-race ban. The FIA should be stricter by starting to hand out bans for this kind of stuff." He emphasized the financial and competitive impact of the incident, noting that his damaged parts could not be repaired in time for the next race in Malaysia.

Race stewards imposed a 10-second time penalty on Colapinto, which was converted to a five-place grid drop for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia the following weekend, as he had already retired from the race. No penalty points were applied to his superlicence. However, both race winner George Russell and second-place finisher Max Verstappen disagreed that a ban was warranted. Russell stated: "Race bans should come from drivers intentionally doing something very dangerous and very reckless. I think it was unfortunate," while Verstappen said: "A race ban probably is a bit much."

Alpine team principal Flavio Briatore apologized to Norris and McLaren, describing the incident as "a very poor move for a driver of his experience" and indicating he would reflect on appropriate responses. Teammate Pierre Gasly, who had been running in seventh place and on course for points, said he was "crushed" by the collision. Norris, who was already in eighth place and struggling with straight-line speed issues, now sits 116 points behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli with eight races remaining.
