Ukraine Destroys Eight Russian Ballistic Launchers, Still Faces Supply Shortage
Ukrainian forces destroyed three and damaged five Russian ballistic launchers in September and early October, temporarily disrupting planned attacks. Defense Minister Khmara said Ukraine lacks sufficient anti-ballistic rockets and urgently needs rapid access to international supplies rather than long-term contracts.
Quick Facts
- Eight Russian ballistic launchers struck and damaged
- Three launchers completely destroyed
- Five launchers significantly damaged
- Planned Russian ballistic attacks temporarily delayed or cancelled
- Anti-ballistic defense rocket supplies deemed insufficient

Ukrainian defense forces damaged eight Russian ballistic missile launchers between September and early October, according to Defense Minister Evgeniy Khmara. Three launchers were completely destroyed and five sustained significant damage, forcing Russia to temporarily cancel or reschedule planned ballistic attacks.
The targeted systems included Iskander operational-tactical missile complexes and S-400 air defense systems used by Russian forces to strike Ukrainian territory. Khmara stated that these strikes represent a strategic response to Ukraine's shortage of air defense rockets. Rather than waiting for long-term contracts, he emphasized the need to rapidly access existing stockpiles from international partners—requiring "tens and hundreds of rockets, not individual deliveries."
Despite these successes, Khmara characterized the ballistic threat as critical. Available and potential supplies of anti-ballistic defense rockets remain insufficient to fully counter Russian attacks. Ukraine's Defense Ministry is working with international partners to accelerate rocket deliveries.
Khmara also reported that Ukrainian forces have achieved a destruction rate exceeding 90% against conventional Iranian-designed Shahed drones. For hypersonic Shahed variants, Ukraine is deploying multiple countermeasures: interceptor drones (with one unit achieving 100% success in trials), large-caliber turrets, and fighter aircraft. Ukraine is simultaneously expanding F-16 maintenance capabilities and scaling production of anti-drone systems.
Why This Matters
Ukraine's destruction of eight Russian ballistic launchers temporarily disrupts strike capability, but acknowledged insufficient anti-ballistic defense stocks create a measurable tactical gap. International partners face requests for accelerated rocket deliveries and expanded air defense coverage rather than long-term procurement timelines. Drone countermeasures—including F-16 maintenance scaling and interceptor drone trials—affect operational readiness and resupply demands across multiple defense systems.
