India's women's cricket team defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the Women's Asia Cup final on September 13, 2026, in Dubai, but declined to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council President Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan's interior minister and Pakistan Cricket Board chairman. The trophy presentation ceremony was delayed by more than half an hour as a result of the standoff. The Indian team, following BCCI instructions, refused to participate in the presentation with Naqvi, despite winning their eighth Asia Cup title. Naqvi remained on the presentation podium and handed the runners-up cheque to Sri Lanka's Chamari Athapaththu, but the Indian players did not collect their trophy or winners' medals.
The refusal mirrors the Indian men's team's decision in October 2025, when they declined to accept the Asia Cup trophy after winning their ninth title under similar circumstances. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia had previously communicated to the ACC that the Indian team would not participate in trophy presentation if Naqvi was involved. BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla later stated that Naqvi raised no objection to the team's decision and that the stance reflected a collective BCCI decision taken after considering prevailing India-Pakistan relations, particularly following the military conflict between the two nations in May 2025.
The policy extends beyond trophy presentations. Since May 2025, Indian cricket teams have avoided customary handshakes with Pakistani counterparts during matches. BCCI officials defended this approach as a conscious decision tied to diplomatic circumstances, while noting that professional courtesies between officials remained necessary. Head coach Amol Muzumdar stated that the team's position was backed by the BCCI and that the tournament was "officially over" for them upon securing the title.
Pakistan's Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry responded by criticizing India for "destroying the sports culture" and argued that Pakistan had not politicized sports. He contended that sports should remain a venue for peace and that victory or defeat without sportsmanship loses meaning. A separate suggestion from the 2025 men's Asia Cup that neutral match official Khaled Al Zarooni present the trophy had been rejected by Naqvi, who insisted on presenting it himself or having no presentation occur.
The controversy has prompted commentary from Indian cricket figures. Former India batter Mohammad Kaif questioned whether Naqvi could adequately manage both his role as Pakistan's interior minister and his responsibilities as PCB chairman and ACC president, suggesting that leading a cricket board requires undivided focus. Opinion pieces raised questions about whether trophies should become casualties of political disputes, noting that trophy presentations are traditionally central to tournament conclusions and that neutral presenters exist within Asian cricket administration.
Why This Matters
India's women's cricket team won the Asia Cup final on September 13, 2026, but declined to accept the trophy from ACC President Mohsin Naqvi due to his simultaneous roles as Pakistan's interior minister and PCB chairman. This decision, consistent with the men's team's 2025 refusal, reflects BCCI-directed policy tied to India-Pakistan diplomatic relations following the May 2025 military conflict. The refusal delayed the trophy presentation ceremony by over 30 minutes and left the Indian squad without physical possession of the trophy or medal ceremony. The incident affects tournament protocols, bilateral cricket engagement practices, and ACC administration procedures for future tournaments.
