Duncan Sheik, 'Spring Awakening' Composer and '90s Pop Star, Dies at 56

Duncan Sheik, the Tony- and Grammy-winning composer of the groundbreaking musical Spring Awakening and singer of the 1996 hit "Barely Breathing," died Thursday, September 17, 2026, at a Manhattan hospital. He was 56. His mother, Suzanne Sheik, confirmed the death to the New York Times, stating the cause was heart failure leading to cardiac arrest.

Sheik first found mainstream recognition in 1996 with his self-titled debut album, which featured "Barely Breathing." The introspective ballad spent 55 consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 16, and earned Sheik a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. The song remained a fixture on radio and later found new audiences through television shows including Glee and Girls.

After navigating the pressures of 1990s pop stardom, Sheik turned his focus to musical theater. He collaborated with playwright and poet Steven Sater, whom he met while practicing Nichiren Buddhism, on the 2001 album Phantom Moon before the two began developing a musical adaptation of Frank Wedekind's 1891 German play Spring Awakening. The resulting rock musical, which premiered off-Broadway in 2006 before moving to Broadway, tackled taboo subjects including incest, abortion, and suicide through contemporary pop-influenced music set in a 19th-century provincial German setting. Spring Awakening won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album. The original cast launched the careers of actors including Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff.

Beyond Spring Awakening, Sheik composed music for numerous theatrical productions, including American Psycho (2016), Alice by Heart (2019), and The Secret Life of Bees. He continued to release solo music throughout his career, with his final album, Claptrap, released in 2022. Born in Montclair, New Jersey, in 1969, Sheik attended Brown University, where he majored in semiotics and played backup guitar for fellow student Lisa Loeb before launching his solo career.

In the final weeks of his life, Sheik was hospitalized and posted updates to his Instagram account documenting his condition. On August 20, he shared a photo from the hospital with a caption reflecting on his treatment. On September 16, his team announced he was in "critical but stable condition" while receiving medical care, requesting privacy during the difficult time. His spokesperson released a statement describing him as a "singular talent and deeply influential voice in music and theater" whose "artistry touched many and leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape." Sheik is survived by his wife, Nora Ariffin, whom he married in 2011, and their 7-year-old daughter, Ines. An off-Broadway revival of Spring Awakening is scheduled to open in November 2026.
