Bombardiers Sachintha Fernando and James Moreau, members of the 7th Toronto Regiment, a reserve artillery unit based at Moss Park Armoury, were arrested by Toronto police on August 11, 2026. The Department of National Defence confirmed the arrests and stated that charges relate to organized crime, kidnapping, and the theft of firearms and weapons.
Both individuals held the rank of bombardier in the 7th Toronto Regiment, which is part of Canada's 32 Canadian Brigade. Moreau enrolled in the Canadian Army as a reservist in March 2018 and deployed on Operation LASER in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fernando enrolled as a reservist in January 2020 and has not been deployed on a Canadian Armed Forces operation.
Following their arrests, both were removed from military duties and their access to Canadian Armed Forces equipment, facilities, and bases was restricted. They remain members of the CAF pending the outcome of an administrative review, a formal process used to assess matters that may affect a member's continued service while providing procedural fairness. The Canadian Armed Forces is assisting Toronto police with the investigation.
