Indian Police Detain Cockroach Party Leader Ahead of Delhi Voter-Roll Protest
Indian police detained Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke on Friday ahead of a protest in Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a controversial voter-roll revision. Despite the detention and enhanced police restrictions, approximately 2,000 demonstrators still gathered at the planned protest site, with similar protests occurring in other Indian cities.
Quick Facts
- Abhijeet Dipke detained by Delhi police
- Planned protest in central Delhi
- Demand for Chief Election Commissioner's resignation
- Two CJP leaders jailed for five days
- Approximately 2,000 protesters gathered despite detention

Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), was detained by Delhi police on Friday, October 16, 2026, ahead of a planned evening protest in the city's central business district. The detention occurred as Dipke was en route to lead a demonstration at Central Park in Connaught Place, where supporters had been urged to gather to wave the Indian flag.
The protest was called to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a controversial revision of India's voter rolls that critics allege favours Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The revision resulted in the deletion of more than 130 million voters from electoral rolls. The Election Commission has denied the allegations and stated that wrongly deleted voters can re-enrol. The BJP has accused opponents of attempting to undermine democracy by questioning legitimate electoral processes.
Dipke's detention followed the jailing of two other CJP leaders, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, who were sentenced to five days in custody earlier in the week for jumping police barricades and holding a flag-waving protest at a site restricted by authorities. Before his detention, Dipke condemned what he called "repressive" attempts to silence the movement and urged supporters to demonstrate that they were "not afraid." Video footage showed police officers detaining Dipke as he held an Indian flag, with him questioning whether he had broken any law.
The Cockroach Janta Party emerged in May as online satire but has since grown into a substantial challenge to Modi's government. The movement, alongside student organisations and opposition parties, has held nearly daily protests throughout October calling for Kumar's resignation. Despite Dipke's detention and enhanced police presence—including a ban on public gatherings and the closure of the planned protest site—approximately 2,000 demonstrators gathered at Connaught Place on Friday evening and unfurled flags.
Student leader Neha Bora was also detained on Friday as she began a march in central Delhi. Smaller protests took place in Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Patna. The BJP's national spokesperson Sambit Patra characterised the movement and opposition protests as attempts to cause "anarchy" and stage a "coup," while authorities have deployed tens of thousands of police and detained thousands of protesters in recent weeks.
Why This Matters
India's Chief Election Commissioner faces calls for resignation amid allegations that a voter-roll revision deleted over 130 million registrations; the Election Commission denies bias. The detention of multiple opposition figures and youth movement leaders, combined with police restrictions on public gatherings in Delhi, signals escalating friction over electoral administration and protest rights. Measurable effects include ongoing demonstrations across multiple Indian cities, mass detentions of activists, and public dispute over the legitimacy of voter-roll changes affecting hundreds of millions of eligible voters.
