FlyDubai Flight Diverts to Saudi Arabia After Pilot-Copilot Dispute

A FlyDubai commercial flight traveling from the United Arab Emirates to Israel made an emergency landing at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday following a dispute between the pilot and co-pilot. The incident briefly raised concerns about a possible hijacking, as the aircraft was carrying dozens of Israeli passengers. In response, Israel deployed combat warplanes as a precautionary measure. All passengers were reported safe by the airline and Israeli officials. An Israeli official stated on condition of anonymity that an investigation was launched due to suspicion of a possible attempt to attack Israelis aboard the plane.

The emergency landing marked an unusual arrival of Israeli citizens in Saudi Arabia, a country with which Israel does not maintain formal diplomatic relations. However, Saudi Arabia has permitted Israeli aircraft to use its airspace since 2022 as part of efforts to normalize regional aviation and improve travel connections. This was not the first emergency landing involving Israeli passengers in Saudi Arabia; similar incidents occurred in 2023 and 2024 involving flights from other airlines.

On the same day, the Lebanese army reported that an Israeli military operation in southern Lebanon resulted in injuries to one soldier and three civilians in the village of Nabatiyeh al-Fawqa. The army initially characterized the incident as a targeted strike on a military vehicle but later indicated the explosion was caused by a "suspicious object." The Lebanese army had been escorting residents in southern Lebanon to visit their homes. This incident occurred amid ongoing tensions over the implementation of a ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Lebanon in June, which stipulated Israeli military withdrawal from southern Lebanon in exchange for the disarmament of Hezbollah.
