Barcelona face resurgent Betis with Raphinha, De Jong returning from injury
Barcelona face Betis on 17 October in a LaLiga fixture featuring two of Europe's in-form teams. Forward Raphinha and midfielder Frenkie de Jong return from injury, though coach Hansi Flick will carefully manage their minutes ahead of crucial Champions League and Clásico matches.
Quick Facts
- LaLiga matchday nine fixture
- Raphinha returns from hamstring injury
- Frenkie de Jong returns from knee injury
- Barcelona have won all 10 matches this season across all competitions
- Betis equal their best-ever league start by this point in the season

FC Barcelona travel to Real Betis on Saturday 17 October for a LaLiga matchday nine fixture at La Cartuja stadium (kick-off 6:30 pm CEST), with both teams in exceptional form. Barcelona lead the league with 24 points from eight wins, while Betis sit third with 19 points from six wins, one draw, and one defeat—equalling their best-ever start by this stage, last matched in the 1934/35 season. Both sides have also impressed in European competition: Barcelona are joint leaders of the UEFA Champions League after winning all 10 matches across all competitions this season, while Betis have won both their group-stage games against Lille and Porto.
Brazilian forward Raphinha returns to availability after suffering a hamstring injury during the international break, missing Barcelona's recent victories over Getafe and Galatasaray. Coach Hansi Flick confirmed Raphinha trained on Thursday and is fit to play but emphasized a cautious approach to his minutes. "When you ask him, he will be ready from the beginning. For me, it's step by step," Flick stated. Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong, sidelined since the 2026 World Cup with a knee injury following conservative treatment to avoid surgery, is also set to return in a limited capacity. "Frenkie's also available," Flick said. "I think he's ready to play some minutes."
Flick highlighted the congested fixture schedule as a key consideration. Barcelona face five matches before the November international break, including a Champions League trip to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday and the first Clásico of the season against Real Madrid on 25 October. The manager rejected the notion of using the calendar as an excuse, noting similar situations have occurred in previous seasons. Flick also acknowledged the need to manage teenager Lamine Yamal's minutes, though the forward's eight goals and nine assists in ten games for Barcelona make rotation difficult. "Lamine is a special player. I know we have to manage his minutes, but for Lamine the most important thing is he enjoys playing football," Flick said.
Betis, managed by Manuel Pellegrini, have established themselves as genuine title contenders this season. They remain unbeaten at home in LaLiga, including a victory over Real Madrid, and have replicated that success in European competition. Flick praised their progress: "They are one of the best teams. The improvement in recent years is amazing. Pellegrini has done a fantastic job." Despite the importance of upcoming fixtures against PSG and Madrid, Barcelona's focus remains on the immediate challenge. "What is important for us is Betis," Flick emphasized. "We only focus on the next game."

Why This Matters
Barcelona and Betis are among Europe's leading teams by points and recent form entering matchday 9; Barcelona lead LaLiga with 24 points (8 wins) and are unbeaten across all competitions (10/10 wins), while Betis are third with 19 points and have matched their best start since 1934/35. Barcelona's return of Raphinha and Frenkie de Jong—two key contributors—comes during a critical five-match stretch before the November break, including trips to PSG and the first Clásico against Real Madrid on 25 October. Fixture congestion and player availability will determine how Barcelona manage rotation in the coming weeks.
