Arsenal's Max Dowman banned for three matches after red card appeal rejected
Arsenal's 16-year-old Max Dowman will serve a three-match suspension after the FA rejected his appeal against a red card for violent conduct during the Carabao Cup loss to Fleetwood Town. The incident occurred in the 85th minute when Dowman reacted to a heavy challenge, and the independent Regulatory Commission upheld the dismissal. Dowman will miss Arsenal's matches against Liverpool, Hull and Newcastle.
Quick Facts
- Red card for violent conduct
- Appeal rejected
- Three-match suspension
- Penalty shootout defeat (5-3)
- Reaction to heavy challenge

Arsenal's 16-year-old midfielder Max Dowman will serve a three-match domestic suspension after the FA's independent Regulatory Commission rejected his appeal against a red card issued during the Carabao Cup match against Fleetwood Town on 27 October.
Dowman was sent off in the 85th minute for violent conduct after reacting to a heavy challenge by Fleetwood defender Harrison Neal. The midfielder made contact with Neal with his leg in response to the tackle, prompting referee Michael Salisbury to show a straight red card. The incident occurred with Arsenal holding a 1-1 draw; the Premier League club subsequently lost 5-3 on penalties to the League Two side, a team ranked 84 places below them in the football pyramid.
The Commission's statement confirmed it dismissed "claims of both wrongful dismissal and excessive punishment." Arsenal submitted an appeal on Wednesday but failed to overturn the decision. Dowman will miss three upcoming matches: Arsenal's Premier League trip to Liverpool on 2 November, followed by fixtures against Hull and Newcastle.
The dismissal marked Dowman's second red card in October; he was also sent off representing England Under-19s against the USA earlier in the month. Manager Mikel Arteta had briefed Dowman before the Fleetwood match on what to expect, emphasising emotional control. As Dowman left the pitch, Arteta made an animated comment to the teenager, prompting criticism from pundit Paul Merson, who suggested the manager should have offered encouragement rather than apparent rebuke to a 16-year-old in his second start of the season.
Arsenal's attacking options are depleted heading into the Liverpool match, with Bukayo Saka (quadriceps injury), Noni Madueke (ankle injury) and Christos Tzolis (hamstring injury) all unavailable. Dowman's absence and the wider injury crisis leave Eberechi Eze as the primary senior option on the wing, though versatile midfielder Kai Havertz could be deployed to cover.
Why This Matters
Arsenal faces a depleted attacking roster heading into a critical November fixture against Liverpool (2 November). Dowman's three-match absence removes a young option from midfield rotation during a period when the club is already without Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, and Christos Tzolis due to injury. The FA's upheld dismissal sets precedent for violent conduct appeals and affects Arsenal's squad flexibility across the next three domestic fixtures.
