BBC closes three channels, cuts 100 news jobs as part of £500M savings plan
The BBC announced the closure of BBC Three, BBC Scotland, and Radio 4 Extra, moving their content to digital platforms (iPlayer and BBC Sounds) as part of a £500 million savings plan. The broadcaster also confirmed 100 additional job cuts in its news division, part of a broader redundancy programme affecting 1,800–2,000 staff, amid declining licence fee income and changing media consumption patterns.
Quick Facts
- Closure of BBC Three television channel
- Closure of BBC Scotland television channel
- Closure of Radio 4 Extra radio service
- Migration of content to iPlayer and BBC Sounds
- 100 job cuts announced in BBC News division

The BBC announced the closure of three broadcast services—BBC Three, BBC Scotland, and Radio 4 Extra—effective spring 2027, as part of a £500 million cost-reduction programme over two years. The channels will transition to digital-only formats, with BBC Three and BBC Scotland moving to iPlayer, and Radio 4 Extra's content shifting to BBC Sounds. BBC Director-General Matt Brittin said the corporation needed to "make every pound work harder for audiences" in response to financial pressures.
The closures mark the second time BBC Three has been taken offline. The youth-oriented channel, which produced hits including Fleabag and Gavin & Stacey, was originally moved online in 2016 before being restored to television in 2022. BBC Scotland, launched in 2019, will retain some content on iPlayer and simulcasts on BBC One and BBC Two in Scotland, though its evening news bulletin Reporting Scotland: News at Seven will cease. Radio 4 Extra, which primarily broadcasts archived speech programming, will have its content distributed across BBC Sounds, with The Daily Service moving to BBC Sounds and local radio.
Alongside the channel closures, the BBC announced 100 additional job cuts in its news division, generating £5.5 million in savings. BBC News Director Rachel Jupp stated that "the way people consume news is changing rapidly, and too many audiences, particularly younger audiences, are not finding us." These cuts are part of a broader redundancy programme affecting 1,800 to 2,000 jobs across the organisation—approximately one in ten staff members—to achieve the £500 million savings target. Around 550 jobs in news have already been announced, with more than 30 cuts in BBC Sport.
The broadcaster faces mounting financial pressure as licence fee income has declined approximately 25 percent in real terms since 2017. The BBC reports that 94 percent of UK adults use its services monthly, but fewer than 80 percent pay the £180 annual licence fee. The cost-cutting measures come amid ongoing negotiations with unions over pay rises, which have rejected two BBC offers, raising the prospect of industrial action. Scottish Culture Minister Mairi McAllan criticised the closure of BBC Scotland as "wholly unacceptable."
Recent weeks have seen the BBC cancel numerous high-profile programmes including RuPaul's Drag Race UK, Blankety Blank, Celebrity Mastermind, Live at the Apollo, Football Focus, and Ski Sunday. The corporation has also announced 110 layoffs in BBC Media Tech, the division powering online services like iPlayer. These decisions occur as the BBC engages in charter renewal negotiations with the government, with weekly meetings underway to determine future funding arrangements.
Why This Matters
The BBC's closure of three broadcast channels and 100+ news jobs affects UK audiences' access to regional programming, youth content, and archive services. The shift to digital-only formats narrows linear broadcast availability as licence fee revenue has declined 25% in real-terms since 2017. Union negotiations over pay remain unresolved, raising industrial action risk. Charter renewal talks with government are ongoing, making these cuts a pivotal test of the BBC's sustainability model under constrained funding.
