- Zverev scheduled to play Djokovic in quarterfinals
Second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka was eliminated from the China Open in the third round on Sunday, defeated 6-4, 6-3 by 34th-ranked Nikola Bartunkova of Czech Republic. The 20-year-old Bartunkova completed the victory in one hour and 35 minutes, firing four aces and maintaining solid defensive play throughout. Sabalenka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, squandered five break-point opportunities in the first set and tossed her racquet in frustration during the second set before losing on the opening match point.
With this result, the tournament lost both of its top two seeds in the first week. Top-seeded Elena Rybakina, who recently overtook Sabalenka as world No. 1, was ousted by Alina Charaeva in the second round on Saturday. The 28-year-old Belarusian Sabalenka has never advanced past the quarterfinals at the Beijing event, extending what she and media have characterized as historic struggles at the venue.
Bartunkova, who displayed composure under pressure, credited her approach to the high-profile matchup. "First of all, I focused on myself, to be calm," she said. "And Aryna, she's great, she's a legend, she's a Grand Slam champion. So, yeah, I'm really happy that I won the match." The Czech player will face Austria's Sinja Kraus in the round of 16.
Elsewhere at the WTA-1000 event, fifth-ranked Mirra Andreeva, the 2026 French Open champion, advanced to the fourth round with a dominant 6-4, 6-1 victory over Polina Kudermetova in 68 minutes, converting five of seven break-point opportunities and hitting six aces. In the men's tournament, top seed and U.S. Open champion Alexander Zverev was scheduled for a quarterfinal clash against Novak Djokovic later Sunday, with the Serbian competing in his unbeaten streak at Beijing.

Why This Matters
The China Open, a WTA-1000 event, has lost both of its top two seeds within the first seven days of competition. Sabalenka's exit marks her continuation of poor results at Beijing (never past quarterfinals), while Rybakina's second-round loss (despite recently becoming world No. 1) reshapes the remaining tournament bracket and title contention. For tournament organizers and broadcasters, early eliminations of marquee players affect viewership and sponsorship value; for bettors and fantasy leagues, the results alter odds and standings.
