India's women's cricket team delivered a dominant performance in the Asian Games 2026 Women's T20 quarterfinal, defeating hosts Japan by 8 wickets on 18 September at Nisshin. After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, India restricted Japan to 57 runs in 19.5 overs, their lowest total in the tournament.

Japan's batting lineup struggled against India's spinners from the outset. Opener Ayaka Kato-Stafford top-scored with 25 runs off 47 balls, while only two Japanese batters reached double figures. India's bowling attack was led by left-arm spinner Shree Charani, who delivered a match-winning performance with figures of 4 wickets for 10 runs in 4 overs. Shafali Verma took 2 wickets, while Deepti Sharma, Shreyanka Patil, and two runouts contributed to Japan's collapse. Japan managed only 3 boundaries across the entire innings, reflecting the intensity of India's bowling.

Chasing the modest target of 58 runs, India completed the victory in just 5 overs, losing 2 wickets. Shafali Verma played a destructive innings of 40 not out off 15 balls, striking 4 fours and 2 sixes. Richa Ghosh remained unbeaten on 12 off 6 balls as India sealed their place in the semifinals. Gunalan Kamalini and Bharti Fulmali were dismissed for 0 and 6 runs respectively.

This marked India's first-ever T20 international encounter against Japan. As defending champions from the 2023 Asian Games, India are attempting to retain their gold medal. They will face Bangladesh in the semifinal on 22 September. India's victory came on the back of an undefeated run in the Asia Cup, which they won for the eighth time in late September.
