Bayern Munich hosted Union Berlin at the Allianz Arena on Friday, September 18, 2026, in round 4 of the Bundesliga 2026/27 season. The match kicked off at 20:30 local time (18:30 GMT), with Bayern seeking to extend their unbeaten start to the campaign.

Bayern arrived in strong form, having won nine of their last ten matches across all competitions. In the Bundesliga specifically, the reigning champions held seven points from three matches after victories over Elversberg (2-1 away) and VfB Stuttgart (5-1 at home), plus a 0-0 draw with Schalke. Their attacking prowess was evident, having scored seven goals in three league matches. Star striker Harry Kane had contributed a goal and assist, while midfielders Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala and Joshua Kimmich provided creative support. Bayern fielded a full-strength squad with no reported injuries.

Union Berlin arrived struggling, sitting 16th with just one point from three matches and one draw from two defeats. The visitors had conceded ten goals already, including a 4-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen and a 3-1 home defeat to Schalke 04 in their previous fixture. However, Union had three players unavailable: Stanley N'Soki, Andrik Markgraf and Oliver Burke were ruled out through injury.

Historically, Bayern dominated this fixture, winning seven of the last ten encounters across all competitions, with Union securing three draws—all at their home ground, Stadion An der Alten Försterei. Bayern's Allianz Arena record against Union was particularly commanding, featuring several high-scoring victories including a 4-0 win in March 2026. Betting odds heavily favoured Bayern, with odds of 1.04 to 1.07 for a home victory, reflecting their status as clear favourites.

Pre-match analysis from multiple sources identified Bayern's high-volume attacking play—having attempted 48 shots and created nine big chances in their previous two Bundesliga matches—against Union's defensive vulnerabilities as the key tactical dynamic. Union's compact midfield block, organised by Rani Khedira and Leopold Querfeld, was expected to focus on defensive organisation and quick counter-attacks through Emmanuel Latte Lath, though the task appeared formidable away from home against the league's strongest attack.

Why This Matters

Bayern Munich's top-four Bundesliga position and unbeaten record face their first significant test against a struggling Union Berlin side that has conceded ten goals in three matches. The outcome affects both teams' qualification prospects: Bayern's position in the title race and European qualification, Union's potential relegation battle if results do not improve. Pre-match odds (1.04–1.07) reflect Bayern's heavy favouritism based on attacking output (nine big chances in two prior league matches) versus Union's defensive vulnerabilities.
