Atlético Madrid vs. Real Madrid ends scoreless in La Liga derby

Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid played to a 0-0 draw in a high-stakes La Liga clash on September 20, 2026, at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in Madrid. The match was the seventh round of the 2026/27 season and featured the reunion of longtime rivals José Mourinho, managing Real Madrid, and Diego Simeone at Atlético after more than 12 years without facing each other in competitive play.

Both teams entered the match with title aspirations but faced injury challenges. Real Madrid, sitting second with 15 points after six matches, was without key defenders Éder Militão and Mendy, as well as midfielder Rodrygo. Atlético, fourth with 13 points from six matches, dealt with uncertainty around forward Julián Álvarez, who had missed recent games with a muscular injury and was unavailable for the clash. Despite these absences, both squads fielded attacking lineups featuring star players including Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior for Real Madrid, and Lee Kang-in for Atlético.

Atlético arrived in strong form, having won their previous two league matches without conceding and scoring seven goals in that span. Real Madrid, conversely, had won five of six matches but showed inconsistency, requiring a last-minute goal from Carlos Espí to defeat Elche 3-2 in the previous round. Barcelona led the standings with 21 points from seven matches, creating urgency for both Madrid clubs to gain ground in the title race.

The match was refereed by Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias, with Daniel Jesús Trujillo Suárez handling VAR duties. Both teams maintained tactical discipline throughout, resulting in a goalless stalemate. The draw left Real Madrid at 15 points in second place and moved Atlético to 14 points, still trailing the league leaders by a significant margin. Historically, this was the 306th meeting between the clubs; Real Madrid held a significant edge in the overall record with 156 victories compared to Atlético's 76, with 73 draws.
