Cunha's late deflected strike rescues Manchester United 1-1 at Fulham

Manchester United salvaged a 1-1 draw at Fulham on 20 September 2026, with Matheus Cunha's deflected 89th-minute strike canceling out Lisandro Martinez's own goal in the 63rd minute. The result left United in 12th place with 5 points from 5 matches, while Fulham remained second-to-last with 2 points, still seeking their first league win under new manager Álvaro Arbeloa.

The match at Craven Cottage was tightly contested, with both teams creating chances before the breakthrough. Martinez's own goal came after Alex Iwobi's shot was parried by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens; the ball ricocheted off the Argentine defender and crossed the line. United pressed for an equalizer and found it late when Cunha's shot from the left took a wicked deflection off Fulham defender David Affengruber, leaving Bernd Leno with no chance.

Arbeloa criticized the officiating after the match, alleging that officials favored United due to fallout from the previous weekend's Manchester derby. He specifically objected to a free-kick awarded to United 35 seconds before Cunha's goal, when referee Michael Oliver judged Cesar Palacios to have fouled Harry Maguire on the halfway line. Arbeloa suggested the officials were influenced by controversy surrounding Erling Haaland's disputed goal in Manchester City's derby victory over United. In his post-match press conference, Arbeloa acknowledged his earlier comments and said he preferred to focus on tactical improvements.

Former Manchester United captain Ashley Young and former forward Louis Saha both defended the free-kick decision as legitimate, noting Maguire's experience in drawing the contact. A separate handball incident involving Fulham's Calvin Bassey in the penalty area was reviewed by VAR but dismissed as the defender's arm was deemed close to his body. Both teams enter the three-week FIFA international break under pressure, with United desperate to reverse recent form and Fulham still without a league victory.
