Brazilians voted on Sunday, October 25, 2026, in a presidential runoff between incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of imprisoned former president Jair Bolsonaro. Polling showed the race as technically tied heading into election day, with both candidates needing more than 50 percent of valid votes to win the presidency in January 2027.

Flávio Bolsonaro voted first on Sunday morning in Rio de Janeiro, stating that "it is time for real change" and that "everyone's life has gotten worse, there is no reason to keep insisting on the error." He campaigned on a hardline law-and-order platform and promised to reduce food prices. Lula voted in São Bernardo do Campo accompanied by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, praising public demonstrations in favor of democratic values. He stated: "The people went to the streets to defend their achievements. If I win, I only owe it to the Brazilian people."

Bolsonaro's first-round margin of over 2.2 million votes had narrowed to a technical tie by the runoff, driven in part by Lula's recent costly policy proposals including debt relief for small businesses and free weekend public transport. Over 33 million of approximately 160 million registered voters abstained in the first round. The election carries significant geopolitical weight, with a Bolsonaro victory signaling a rightward shift for Latin America's largest economy and a closer alignment with U.S. President Donald Trump, while a Lula victory would maintain left-leaning leadership alongside Mexico's Claudia Sheinbaum.

Both candidates faced corruption allegations. Bolsonaro admitted accepting approximately $12 million from discredited banker Daniel Vorcaro for a film about his father and is under investigation for corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion. Lula spent over a year in prison on corruption convictions that were later annulled. The candidates diverged sharply on ideology, U.S.-Brazil relations, climate change, and social welfare.

Under Brazilian electoral law, if the candidates received exactly equal valid votes, Lula—at age 80—would win under a tiebreaker rule favoring the older candidate. Flávio Bolsonaro is 45 years old. The next president will appoint at least three of eleven Supreme Court judges during their term. Flávio has promised to pursue an amnesty for his father and judicial reform; Lula has framed the election as a referendum on democracy. Voting took place nationwide from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Brasília time, with results beginning to be released after polls closed.

Why This Matters

Brazil's presidential runoff determines the political direction of Latin America's largest economy and influences regional alignment on trade, climate policy, and U.S. relations. A Bolsonaro victory would signal a rightward shift and closer alignment with the Trump administration; a Lula victory would maintain leftward-leaning governance alongside Mexico's current administration. The winner will appoint at least three of eleven Supreme Court judges during their term, affecting judicial priorities including ongoing corruption investigations and potential amnesty decisions. Over 160 million registered voters participated in determining January 2027 leadership.
