Australian actor Richard Norton dies after injecting unapproved peptides at double dose
Australian actor Richard Norton, 75, died on March 30, 2025, after suffering cardiac arrest caused by an anaphylactic reaction to unapproved peptides CJC1295 and ipamorelin that he injected at double the prescribed dose. A coroner ruled his death the first confirmed fatality in Australia linked to unapproved peptide use and recommended tighter TGA restrictions on such products.
Quick Facts
- Norton injected unapproved peptides CJC1295 and ipamorelin at double the prescribed dose
- Norton experienced an anaphylactic reaction leading to cardiac arrest
- Norton was hospitalized at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne
- Coroner recommended TGA review peptide restrictions
- Medical Board investigation found insufficient evidence of peptide safety and efficacy

Richard Norton, a 75-year-old Australian actor, martial artist, stuntman, and fight choreographer, died on March 30, 2025, after injecting unapproved peptides CJC1295 and ipamorelin at twice the prescribed dose. Melbourne coroner David Ryan concluded that Norton suffered an anaphylactic reaction leading to cardiac arrest triggered by the peptide injection. Norton's death is believed to be the first confirmed fatality in Australia linked to unapproved peptide use.
Norton approached Dr. Jerzy Muchnicki in mid-March 2025 seeking peptide therapy to address fatigue, shoulder pain, and muscle loss following previous shoulder reconstructions. The doctor discussed the experimental nature of the treatment and potential risks with Norton, who had previously been prescribed peptides by another practitioner. Norton signed an informed consent form and underwent blood tests before receiving prescriptions for CJC1295 and ipamorelin injections from a licensed Queensland compounding pharmacy on March 19. Within days, Norton reported feeling improved symptoms and better sleep.
On March 28, two days before his death, Norton disclosed to a nurse at Muchnicki's clinic that he had been administering double the prescribed dose. The nurse advised him to return to the prescribed dose from the following week. Hours later, after injecting a dose of the peptides, Norton experienced flushing and heat sensations before becoming unresponsive. He was rushed to Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, where he died two days later.
The coroner's report noted that Dr. Muchnicki did not consult clinical records documenting Norton's dosing error when Norton called requesting a replacement vial on March 28, nor did Muchnicki speak directly with Norton to confirm appropriate use. An independent expert reviewed by the Medical Board of Australia found insufficient evidence that CJC1295 or ipamorelin is safe or effective for human use, and deemed Muchnicki's clinical notes "sparse, inadequate and perfunctory" and below expected standards. The board did not pursue regulatory action but required Muchnicki to undergo training in clinical record keeping. Muchnicki has since committed not to prescribe peptides without robust clinical evidence.
Coroner David Ryan recommended the Therapeutic Goods Administration review the therapeutic benefits and safety risks of these peptides and consider reclassifying them from schedule 4 (prescription-only) to schedule 10 (clinical trials or experimental use only). Ryan stated he was "not satisfied that it is appropriate for them to be available to be prescribed by medical practitioners" given uncertainties about their therapeutic benefit and patient safety risks. The TGA has previously warned consumers about risks associated with importing and using unapproved peptides promoted online.
Why This Matters
A documented death linked to unapproved peptide therapy has triggered regulatory scrutiny in Australia. The case establishes measurable risk: self-administered overdose of experimental compounds without robust safety data led to fatal anaphylaxis. The coroner's recommendation to reclassify peptides from schedule 4 (prescription-only) to schedule 10 (experimental/trials only) would restrict prescriber access and patient availability, affecting clinical practices, compounding pharmacies, and practitioners currently offering peptide therapy. The TGA review outcome will determine whether these compounds remain accessible through licensed prescribers or move under tighter experimental protocols.
