Typhoon 25 passes east of Nagoya, brings heavy rain to eastern Japan

Typhoon 25, named Dujuan, is moving northward through Japanese waters as a large, strong system. As of September 20, the typhoon's center pressure measured 970 hPa with maximum sustained winds of 35 m/s (126 km/h) near the center and gusts reaching 50 m/s (180 km/h). The storm is expected to approach the Kanto region and eastern Japan's Pacific side from September 21 to 22, with forecasts indicating the center will pass east of Nagoya and Aichi Prefecture, avoiding direct impact on the 2026 Asian Games being held in Nagoya.

While the typhoon will avoid a direct hit on the games, eastern and central Japan face severe weather threats. Rainfall is expected to reach record levels, with some areas of the Izu Islands and southern Kanto potentially receiving 200–400 mm within 24 hours—amounts comparable to recent regional flooding events. The Kanto region is forecast to experience warning-level heavy rain beginning September 20, even before the typhoon's closest approach. Maximum sustained winds of 50 m/s are predicted for the Izu Islands and Kanto on September 21, with 45 m/s gusts expected in the Kanto region on September 22. Wave heights in coastal areas are forecast to exceed 8–9 meters.

Meteorogical agencies warn of significant risks including landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, river overflow, and road inundation. A linear precipitation band may form, further intensifying rainfall. Transportation disruptions are anticipated during the Silver Week holiday period, with rail services, flights, and road traffic facing potential closures or delays from September 20 onward. Forecasts indicate the typhoon will accelerate to speeds exceeding 50 km/h as it approaches the Kanto region, then transition to an extratropical cyclone by September 22 as it moves into the Pacific. The 2026 Asian Games organizing committee has indicated relief that the storm's eastward track will not directly disrupt the event, though some outdoor competitions may still face weather-related challenges.
