A Houthi ballistic missile attack on a military training facility in Yemen's southeastern Shabwa province killed at least 53 people and injured over 200 on Monday, October 19, according to provincial government officials and medical sources. Three ballistic missiles struck the Ahmed Al-Sulaimani Training Center at Al-Alam military base in Jardan district near Ataq, the provincial capital. The facility was hosting newly recruited internal security personnel undergoing training at the time of the strike.
Casualty figures initially reported at 25 killed and 30 injured rose sharply as emergency teams continued evacuating victims and hospitals mobilized to receive the wounded. Medical personnel described some bodies as badly burned, complicating casualty counts. The Shabwa provincial government stated figures remained preliminary and could rise further. Critically injured patients were being transferred to hospitals in nearby Hadramout province and Aden city as local medical facilities became overwhelmed.
The Houthis later claimed responsibility for the attack through their media outlet al-Masirah. A Houthi military spokesperson stated they had struck "the Saudi enemy's mobilisations" at the base, while Houthi-run media cited a military source saying forces had struck "Saudi-backed forces" at Al-Alam. The group also called on "all Yemenis" to leave military camps where it said Saudi Arabia was mobilizing forces.
Yemen's UN-recognized government president Rashad al-Alimi characterized the attack as a "cowardly terrorist attack" and vowed an immediate hard response. He phoned UN Secretary General António Guterres requesting the UN classify the Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization. The Shabwa provincial authority called the incident "a military escalation and a blatant assault on the province's security" and requested additional air defense systems from the government and Saudi-led coalition.
The attack occurred amid intensified fighting between Houthi forces and government forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition. Earlier in October, government forces launched a campaign to recapture areas controlled by the Houthis, recovering territory near the Bab al-Mandab waterway on the Red Sea. Military sources told media outlets that the Houthis cut the road connecting government-controlled Shabwa with Houthi-controlled Bayda governorate on October 18, and expressed concern the missile strike could precede a broader ground offensive.
Why This Matters
The strike killed at least 53 military and security personnel and injured over 200, representing a significant casualty event in an active conflict zone. The attack occurred amid intensified fighting between Houthi forces and Saudi-led coalition-backed government forces, following a government campaign to retake territory near the Red Sea's Bab al-Mandab waterway in October 2024. Medical facilities in the region became overwhelmed, requiring patient transfers across multiple provinces. The incident follows a September 2024 resumption of fighting after a ceasefire that broadly held from 2022; escalation patterns and supply-line disruptions (including reports of road closures between governorates) affect humanitarian access, displacement flows, and regional shipping security.
