Two helicopters collided while attempting to land at Pheriche village in Nepal's Everest region on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, at approximately 08:15 local time. The crash killed a 47-year-old Indian tourist named Vasanth Kumar Balaramudu and injured two others: a New Zealand passenger and a Nepali pilot. The collision occurred at an altitude of 4,200 metres (13,780 feet), approximately 12 kilometres south of Mount Everest Base Camp.
One aircraft was operated by Fishtail Air, piloted by Captain Prajjwal KC, while the other was operated by Air Dynasty, commanded by Captain Rabindra Prajapati. According to Nepal's Civil Aviation Authority spokesman Gyanendra Bhul, the accident occurred when both helicopters attempted to land at the same spot. Video footage of the incident shows the helicopter blades of the two aircraft clipping each other during descent. Weather conditions at the time appeared clear with no visible strong winds, though one helicopter appeared to be descending more rapidly than the other.
The injured passengers and crew were rescued and transported to Kathmandu for treatment. Fishtail Air stated that one of its passengers and captain had been injured, while Air Dynasty confirmed that its helicopter was carrying cargo and was operated by one crew member who sustained no injuries.
Helicopters are essential for operations in the Everest region due to the absence of roads and challenging terrain. They are regularly used to evacuate trekkers and guides who become ill or exhausted at high altitude. The crash occurred during Nepal's popular autumn climbing season, when expeditions to Everest and nearby peaks like Ama Dablam are underway. Heavy snowfall had previously disrupted trekking routes, but conditions had improved by the time of the collision.
Why This Matters
The collision represents a critical safety incident in Nepal's high-altitude aviation sector, which serves as lifeline infrastructure for trekking and emergency medical evacuation in the Everest region during peak climbing season. The accident occurred when two aircraft attempted to land at the same location simultaneously, raising questions about ground coordination protocols at remote landing zones. The fatality and injuries affect tourism operations and may prompt regulatory review of helicopter traffic management procedures in Nepal's Everest region.
