Two helicopters operated by Dynasty Air and Fishtail Air collided while landing at Pheriche in Solukhumbu district, northeastern Nepal, on Tuesday morning, resulting in one fatality and one injury. The collision occurred at the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Pheriche helipad around 8:11–8:15 a.m. local time. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, the rotor blades of the two aircraft struck each other as both helicopters approached the landing zone. CCTV footage of the incident has been recovered, documenting the moment the aircraft came dangerously close.
The deceased was a foreign national; one source identified the victim as an Indian national, though official confirmation from authorities remains pending. A second person was injured in the collision and was airlifted to Lukla by a Prabhu Air helicopter for medical treatment. Police confirmed that no fire occurred following the impact, and the body was transported to Lukla. Details regarding the condition of the injured passenger and information about other crew and passengers aboard both aircraft remain unclear.
Pheriche is located at high altitude approximately 150 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu on the route toward Mount Everest Base Camp. Small helicopters are widely used throughout Nepal for tourism, mountaineering support, supply transport, and emergency rescue operations. The District Police Office and Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal have initiated an investigation into the cause of the collision. Officials stated that they are gathering further details and conducting data collection to establish additional circumstances surrounding the incident.
Why This Matters
The collision between two commercial helicopters operating in Nepal's high-altitude tourism and mountaineering corridor has resulted in one confirmed fatality and one injury requiring emergency evacuation. Helicopter operations are essential infrastructure for medical evacuation, supply transport, and Base Camp access in this region. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal and District Police have initiated investigations into the cause; findings may affect operational procedures, air traffic management protocols, or landing zone coordination for the dozens of helicopter operators serving the Mount Everest region.
