Sixth suspect released on bail in RAF Fairford security incident investigation
A 25-year-old UK-Iranian dual national has been released on bail following arrest on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts connected to a security incident at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. Five other British suspects were arrested earlier and similarly released on bail; counter-terrorism police found petrol but no explosive devices in three suspicious vehicles near the US Air Force base. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were "strong indications" Iran was involved, though Tehran has denied any role.
Quick Facts
- Arrest on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts under section 5 of Terrorism Act 2006
- Three suspicious vehicles spotted near RAF Fairford
- Evacuation of dozens of homes
- Searches of two properties in Westminster
- Major security incident declared

A 25-year-old dual UK-Iranian national has been released on bail after arrest on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts in connection with an incident at RAF Fairford, a US Air Force base in Gloucestershire, England. The arrest on Thursday in Westminster, London followed a major security alert last weekend when three suspicious vehicles were reported near the airbase, prompting evacuation of dozens of homes. Five other British nationals, all in their twenties, were arrested earlier in the same investigation and subsequently released on bail on Monday.
Counter-terrorism police confirmed that a quantity of petrol, but no explosive devices, was found in the vehicles. The BBC understands that one of the five earlier suspects dialed 999 approximately one hour before a local farmer alerted police to a large group of masked men near the vehicles. Police released the five men as an "investigative decision" grounded in "experience and strategy," according to statements at the time.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham convened a Cobra meeting following the incident and stated there were "strong indications" Iran played a part, though he provided no further details. Tehran has categorically denied involvement through its embassy in London. Vicki Evans, senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, described the investigation as "hugely complex," stating that specialist teams were "interrogating multiple lines of inquiry" and examining "all possible angles – including possible foreign state involvement."
RAF Fairford has been used by US bombers in recent months after the UK approved US requests to conduct what Washington characterized as defensive strikes against Iran. In July, Iran stated that "any base used for aggression against Iranian territory constitutes a legitimate target for our forces." On Monday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News that events over the weekend clearly involved "a foreign actor," without providing evidence or specifics. US President Donald Trump stated he would not have released the five men and expressed surprise at their bail decision.
On Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed Israel had provided Britain with intelligence about the suspected plot. Netanyahu stated Israel warned UK authorities about what he termed an "Iranian-sponsored attack" shortly before Britain announced a ban on trade with illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The investigation remains ongoing.
Why This Matters
A security incident at a US military facility in the UK has triggered a major counter-terrorism investigation affecting civilian evacuation, international relations, and intelligence sharing between allied nations. Six arrests have been made, though all suspects have been released on bail pending investigation; the discovery of petrol but no explosives in searched vehicles leaves the operational scope of the alleged plot unclear. The incident involves disputed attribution claims between UK/US/Israeli officials and Iran, which carries implications for UK-US defense coordination, UK-Iran diplomatic relations, and potential constraints on investigation procedures if foreign state involvement is confirmed.
