A collision between an Indian Navy warship and a Pakistani naval vessel occurred in the North Arabian Sea on September 15, 2026, during a routine Indian surveillance mission in international waters. According to Indian sources, the Pakistani ship approached at high speed and maneuvered in what India described as an "unprofessional and unsafe manner," resulting in contact with the Indian warship. The impact caused no major damage to either vessel.
In response, India's Ministry of External Affairs summoned Pakistan's Charge d'Affaires in New Delhi on September 16 to lodge a formal protest. India stated that the Pakistani vessel's conduct violated Article 10 of the 1991 bilateral Agreement between India and Pakistan on Advance Notice on Military Exercises, Manoeuvres and Troops Movements. The MEA advised Pakistan that all military units must observe due care and respect relevant agreements to prevent future incidents. India's Charge d'Affaires in Islamabad was also instructed to lodge a similar protest with Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Retired Indian naval officers cited in reporting characterized the incident as deliberate and part of a pattern. Captain D.K. Sharma (retired), a former Navy Public Relations Officer, described it as a "deliberate act of hostile intent." Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha (retired) noted that such incidents are not uncommon, referencing a 2011 collision between INS Godavari and PNS Babur in which the Pakistani frigate approached at high speed in rough seas. The sources noted that Pakistan's Navy has historically not adhered to safe-distance protocols in international waters.
Pakistan has not issued a public statement on the incident. The collision marks a rare direct naval encounter between the two countries and occurs against the backdrop of longstanding maritime tensions in the region.
Why This Matters
The collision occurred in the contested North Arabian Sea during routine Indian surveillance and raises questions about compliance with the 1991 bilateral military agreement between India and Pakistan governing advance notice of military exercises. If the incident reflects a pattern of unsafe maritime maneuvering, it could trigger escalated diplomatic tensions, increased naval monitoring protocols, or revision of existing maritime safety agreements. Shipping and commercial traffic in the region, as well as naval operations by both countries, may be affected by changes to de-conflict procedures or heightened alert postures.
