At least twelve passenger flights across Europe received bomb threats on Thursday, November 5, 2026, triggering emergency diversions, military escorts, and security inspections at multiple airports. Affected airlines included Finnair, Wizz Air, Aer Lingus, Ryanair, LOT Polish Airlines, and Aegean Airlines, with flights bound for or departing from Italy, Poland, Bulgaria, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Romania, and France. Security checks on all aircraft found no explosives or dangerous items.
Investigative sources reported that threats targeting the Finnair flight from Helsinki to Rome and the Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Rome came in a single anonymous email written in Italian, sent to Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) and associated airport operators early Thursday morning. The email was signed "fighters of the male state" and referenced opposition to a "feminist regime," threatening to "paint the sky red" by bombing planes. Similar threats to earlier Ryanair flights were also written in Italian, and an email link appeared connected to a Colombian email alias, though Colombian officials stated the account may have been compromised.
Notable diversions included an Aer Lingus Airbus A320 with 151 passengers and six crew members from Dublin to Rome, which was rerouted to the French military base at Evreux and escorted by French Rafale fighter jets. A Wizz Air flight from Milan to Warsaw was diverted to Vienna. Three Ryanair flights bound for Sofia, Bulgaria, were intercepted and escorted by Bulgarian MiG-29 fighter jets; one landed in Plovdiv while two landed at Vasil Levski Airport in Sofia. A Finnair flight from Helsinki to Rome landed as scheduled after being escorted by Italian Air Force fighter jets. Czech police confirmed four aircraft landing in Prague had been subject to bomb threats; assessments determined credibility as low.
This was the second wave of such threats within one week. On Monday, November 3, a Wizz Air flight from London Luton to Sofia was escorted by a Hungarian fighter jet to Budapest. On Tuesday, November 4, approximately seven to ten European flights received similar threats. The UK government described earlier incidents as "malicious hoax threats." EU Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas stated it was "too early" to determine whether the incidents were linked, though national investigations remained ongoing.
Authorities have not publicly identified suspects or confirmed coordination between threat campaigns. Aviation expert Marco Chan noted the threats were "most likely a hoax, but the system is right to treat it as real," characterizing such threats as "possibly part of a pattern of cheap, deniable disruption" to air travel due to the asymmetry between the cost of sending threats and the expensive response required from airlines, airports, and militaries.
Why This Matters
At least 12 European flights were diverted or escorted by military aircraft on November 5, 2026, due to bomb threats, disrupting scheduled air traffic across multiple countries and requiring emergency responses from national air forces and airport operators. No explosives were detected on any aircraft. This represents the second incident wave in one week; authorities are investigating whether the threats are coordinated hoaxes or part of a systematic disruption pattern. The cost asymmetry between sending threats and the required operational response (military escorts, airport security, flight diversions) may establish a measurable precedent for aviation security response protocols.
