Atlético Madrid defeats Manchester United 2-0 in Champions League

Atlético Madrid secured a 2-0 victory over Manchester United in a UEFA Champions League league-phase match on October 13 at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano stadium in Madrid. Pablo Barrios opened the scoring in the first minute after a rapid counter-attack involving Kang-in Lee and Álex Baena, giving Atlético an early advantage. The goal came after just 47 seconds, marking Atlético's second-earliest Champions League goal.

Manchester United created several opportunities to respond but failed to capitalise. Bryan Mbeumo posed the primary attacking threat for the visitors, while captain Bruno Fernandes struck the crossbar. A goal by Johnny Cardoso was disallowed following a VAR review that identified a handball by Marcos Llorente in the build-up. The match shifted decisively in Atlético's favour in the 79th minute when Leny Yoro was sent off following a VAR review for denying Jonathan David a goalscoring opportunity, reducing Manchester United to 10 players.

Five minutes after Yoro's dismissal, Ademola Lookman sealed the win with a rebound goal after goalkeeper Senne Lammels saved Jonathan David's shot. The victory marked Atlético's first win in the Champions League league phase after their opening defeat to Liverpool. Atlético manager Diego Simeone highlighted the importance of Barrios' early goal for the midfielder's confidence. The match took on added significance for Atlético, as captain Koke was absent following the death of his mother; players honoured him during celebrations. Atlético will face Stuttgart on October 21, while Manchester United will play Como on the same date.
