The Police Service Commission (PSC) of Nigeria has approved the promotion of over 3,800 senior police officers following successful completion of promotion examinations and oral interviews. The approvals were granted at the Commission's plenary meeting held on 29 October 2026 in Abuja, presided over by Chairman DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (retired).
Among the most senior appointments, two Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) were elevated to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG). AIG Olaolu Adegbite, Head of the INTERPOL National Central Bureau in Abuja, and AIG Dankombo F. Morris, Head of Zone 4 Headquarters in Makurdi, received the promotions. Adegbite holds a Bachelor of Arts in Russian Language from the University of Lagos and a Master of Arts in Philology from the Pushkin Institute in Moscow. He is a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), a member of the FBI National Academy Associates, and an alumnus of Harvard Kennedy School. He previously served as Director of Operations at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Morris, a native of Gombe State, holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Maiduguri and a Diploma in Police Science. He previously served as Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State.
The promotion structure extended across multiple ranks. Ten officers were elevated from Commissioner of Police (CP) to AIG, while 17 Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) were promoted to CP. Additionally, 85 Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) were promoted to DCP, 49 Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) to ACP, 245 Superintendents of Police (SPs) to CSP, 498 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) to SP, and 3,218 Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) to DSP.
Notable among those promoted within the CSP category were Josephine Adeh, Public Relations Officer of the FCT Police Command, and Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, Public Relations Officer of the Adamawa State Police Command, both elevated from SP to CSP. Dr Ruth Oyinmearelu Okunbo, Medical Director of the MD Abubakar Police Hospital in Deidei and the ASR Police Reference Hospital in Utako, Abuja, was among those promoted from ACP to DCP, along with Isah Adejoh of the Police Staff College, Jos, and Mannir Yusuf Gafai of the Kano State Police Command.
Chairman Argungu congratulated the newly promoted officers, stating that their elevation should serve as motivation for greater commitment to their duties and that higher ranks came with increased responsibilities. He emphasized that the officers were expected to justify their promotions through professionalism, dedication, and improved performance in protecting lives and property, maintaining law and order, and improving service delivery. The PSC Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Torty Njoku Kalu, issued the official statement announcing the promotions in Abuja.
Why This Matters
Personnel promotions across Nigeria's police hierarchy affect command structure, operational readiness, and chain of command across federal and state-level law enforcement. Two new Deputy Inspectors-General and ten new Assistant Inspectors-General will reshape senior leadership; 3,800+ promotions across ranks from Assistant Superintendent to DIG level impact resource allocation, station management, and policy implementation across all 36 states and the FCT. The PSC approval signals institutional renewal and establishes measurable performance expectations tied to law and order delivery.
