A two-storey building under construction collapsed in the Fadeyi area of Lagos State early Friday morning, resulting in one confirmed death and the rescue of three adult males. The incident occurred at Akinola Street, near Fadeyi Bus Stop, off Ikorodu Road. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) received a distress call at 12:10 a.m. and deployed its Cobra Response Team from Onipanu Base, which arrived at the scene within two minutes. Rescue teams heard groaning sounds from beneath the collapsed structure, indicating possible survivors, and deployed an excavator to facilitate search and rescue operations.
As of the early morning hours, three construction workers had been pulled alive from the debris and transferred to hospital after receiving immediate pre-hospital care from LASEMA paramedics and the Lagos State Ambulance Service. One body was recovered from the rubble. LASEMA stated that search and rescue operations were ongoing to determine whether additional workers remained trapped beneath the debris. The agency implemented safety measures to protect both victims and emergency personnel throughout the operation.
The cause of the collapse has not yet been determined and will be investigated by relevant regulatory agencies. LASEMA confirmed that multiple agencies coordinated the response, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and the Nigeria Police Force (Alagbon Division). The Lagos State Government expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and pledged commitment to addressing substandard construction practices through strengthened monitoring and enforcement in collaboration with the Lagos State Building Control Agency.
